Chapter Twenty-Two
Eddie
Iâm trying to work, my laptop propped up on my legs while Iâm reclining in Jackieâs bed, but I canât help stealing glances at her. Sheâs playing Rule Them All and watching her is enthralling. I feel like Dorothy peeking behind the curtain and realizing the wizard is just a man. I get why the game is a big part of her life. Itâs the only place she seems to truly trust herself, to take risks. I see why sheâs going to miss it so much.
âI can feel you watching me, creeper,â Jackie taunts me without turning around.
âJust trying to capture all the new swear words and epithets. Iâm petitioning Websterâs to start a salty gamer edition.â
âFuck off, you human equivalent of elevator music.â
âYou wound me.â I place the back of my hand against my forehead and pretend to wilt. âIâm writing that one down.â I shift my eyes to my screen and pretend to type.
Jackie saunters over and closes my laptop, nearly taking my fingertips off in the process.
âBullshit. We both know you canât get enough of me.â She pouts her red lips and leans in. I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear and kiss her, soft and sweet. She lets out a gentle moan.
âI canât help it. Youâre just such a sweetheart.â I kiss the tip of her nose. âAnd cute as a button.â
âDonât make me drag the coffee grinder up here.â
I chuckle out loud and she gives me that devious smile that undoes me.
âCome on, I need caffeine.â
She grabs my hand and drags me down the stairs to the shop. Jackie slips behind the counter and gets to work on her cappuccino and my black coffee.
Jesús is working alone this morning and gives me two thumbs-up. I return the greeting with a wave and a big grin. Itâs good to know heâs rooting for me. I can use all the help I can get.
Jackie holds out my coffee but pulls it away before I can grab it.
âNot so fast. No free rides. Youâve gotta earn it, Khakis.â
She leans across the counter and runs her wet pink tongue across her top lip, leaving it glistening and tempting.
I match her pose, leaning into her across the counter.
âIs that so?â My voice is a low, sultry rumble. I slide my fingers into her hair, pull her mouth to mine and take it in a rough, demanding kiss. I claim Jackie and love every second of it.
âIncoming,â JC calls out to us, covered by the worldâs worst fake cough.
Jackie pulls away to catch sight of an older woman in a tailored jacket, sensible loafers and nicely creased slacks.
âFuck me gently with a chainsaw,â Jackie groans, her whole body stiffening. Before I can even ask who it is, she ducks and disappears behind the counter.
âJacqueline Marie Ryan, you canât hide from your mother.â
Thatâs Jackieâs mom? Sheâs Jackieâs complete opposite. Strait-laced and put-together. I bet she has an IRA.
âNot hiding, just dropped a contact,â Jackie retorts without standing up.
âYou donât wear glasses,â I tell her, earning me a colorful reply that would make sailors blush.
