Chapter Twenty-Two

Eddie

I’m trying to work, my laptop propped up on my legs while I’m reclining in Jackie’s bed, but I can’t help stealing glances at her. She’s playing Rule Them All and watching her is enthralling. I feel like Dorothy peeking behind the curtain and realizing the wizard is just a man. I get why the game is a big part of her life. It’s the only place she seems to truly trust herself, to take risks. I see why she’s going to miss it so much.

“I can feel you watching me, creeper,” Jackie taunts me without turning around.

“Just trying to capture all the new swear words and epithets. I’m petitioning Webster’s to start a salty gamer edition.”

“Fuck off, you human equivalent of elevator music.”

“You wound me.” I place the back of my hand against my forehead and pretend to wilt. “I’m writing that one down.” I shift my eyes to my screen and pretend to type.

Jackie saunters over and closes my laptop, nearly taking my fingertips off in the process.

“Bullshit. We both know you can’t get enough of me.” She pouts her red lips and leans in. I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear and kiss her, soft and sweet. She lets out a gentle moan.

“I can’t help it. You’re just such a sweetheart.” I kiss the tip of her nose. “And cute as a button.”

“Don’t make me drag the coffee grinder up here.”

I chuckle out loud and she gives me that devious smile that undoes me.

“Come on, I need caffeine.”

She grabs my hand and drags me down the stairs to the shop. Jackie slips behind the counter and gets to work on her cappuccino and my black coffee.

Jesús is working alone this morning and gives me two thumbs-up. I return the greeting with a wave and a big grin. It’s good to know he’s rooting for me. I can use all the help I can get.

Jackie holds out my coffee but pulls it away before I can grab it.

“Not so fast. No free rides. You’ve gotta earn it, Khakis.”

She leans across the counter and runs her wet pink tongue across her top lip, leaving it glistening and tempting.

I match her pose, leaning into her across the counter.

“Is that so?” My voice is a low, sultry rumble. I slide my fingers into her hair, pull her mouth to mine and take it in a rough, demanding kiss. I claim Jackie and love every second of it.

“Incoming,” JC calls out to us, covered by the world’s worst fake cough.

Jackie pulls away to catch sight of an older woman in a tailored jacket, sensible loafers and nicely creased slacks.

“Fuck me gently with a chainsaw,” Jackie groans, her whole body stiffening. Before I can even ask who it is, she ducks and disappears behind the counter.

“Jacqueline Marie Ryan, you can’t hide from your mother.”

That’s Jackie’s mom? She’s Jackie’s complete opposite. Strait-laced and put-together. I bet she has an IRA.

“Not hiding, just dropped a contact,” Jackie retorts without standing up.

“You don’t wear glasses,” I tell her, earning me a colorful reply that would make sailors blush.
